In the heart of Pemba, communities in Kizimbani and Weni have long faced a daily struggle – accessing clean water. For years, women and children bore the burden of walking long distances to collect water, limiting opportunities for education, economic growth, and overall well-being. But today, thanks to innovative solar-powered solutions by Gadgetronix, that reality is changing!
A New Dawn for Kizimbani and Weni
For the people of Kizimbani, the introduction of the Kizimbani Community Solar Pumping System has been nothing short of life-changing. With a powerful 36.8 kWp solar system, this pump now delivers 30,000 liters of clean water per hour, replacing diesel-powered systems that were costly and unsustainable. Meanwhile, in Weni, the Weni Solar Pump System with 41.4 kWp of solar power now pumps 45,000 liters per hour, ensuring reliable and sustainable water access for the community.
A Lifeline for Women
For many women in these communities, access to clean water has transformed daily life. Instead of spending hours collecting water, they now have time to focus on education, family, and economic opportunities.
In Weni, the impact is just as profound. Women have gained newfound freedom to engage in income-generating activities, while children benefit from better hygiene and more time for education.

These solar-powered solutions are more than just infrastructure – they are a lifeline that is bringing freedom, opportunity, and sustainability to these communities. Women are reclaiming their time, children are gaining better health and education, and entire communities are being uplifted by the power of clean energy.
A Model for Change
The success of the solar-powered water systems in Kizimbani and Weni has sparked a conversation about what’s possible when communities embrace renewable energy solutions. It is a model that can be replicated in other parts of Zanzibar and beyond, showing that with the right support, access to clean water and energy can be both sustainable and scalable.
As Gadgetronix and OIKOS East Africa continue to work together, the future looks bright. This project is only the beginning, with plans for more solar-powered initiatives that will benefit not only water access but also educational facilities and health centers across the region.
Kizimbani and Weni stand as a beacon of hope, demonstrating how solar energy can be harnessed to improve lives and build a more sustainable future. This story isn’t just about technology; it’s about the people whose lives have been changed by it. And for them, the sun has never shone brighter.
